Forest Hills pool

We took a Father's Day swim at the Forest Hills pool today. The weather was so perfect, we were surprised that more people weren't there.

As you can see, Lucie has turned into a little fish. Milo had to be coaxed in, then wouldn't put his swim vest on. He finally did after being bribed with chocolate.

Even with the swim vest, he clung to me like a little koala bear.

Milo and sticks

We think Milo's a natural for hockey.

Juliet's birthday party

Violin lesson

Lucie got her first violin lesson from Krista -- how to hold the violin, using a cereal box. Lucie very much wants to rent a violin and take more lessons.

At the Eno

Skipping rocks at the Eno for Nyree's birthday.

Milo's ABCs

They go along pretty normally until he gets to Q R S, at which point he usually says, "Q R S, Q R yes, Q R no, no, no, no."

Cherries and garlic scapes

We are so excited to have a cherry tree. Last year the birds ate all of the half-dozen or so cherries the tree produced. This year it produced about three cups of cherries, and we covered the tree with a net. The cherries are very sour and made delicious cherry tarts.

We also harvested garlic scapes, which are the beautiful curly tops of garlic shoots.

They have a lovely mild garlic flavor and are delicious cooked like asparagus, or in eggs.

Lucie photos

Lucie got a camera recently. I love seeing the way she sees, and the way Milo looks when she's the one taking the picture.

Thank you, Aileen

Lucie was lucky to have the same wonderful teacher for kindergarten and first grade. She contributed the following to Aileen's goodbye book.

Aileen's class

Lucie has had a great two years in Aileen's class at CPSC. Here she is with Orla and Nyree on the Eno River field trip last week. Second grade, here they come.

META memories

We just got back from a week at Camp Rockmont in Black Mountain for the META gathering. It was a beautiful time, and none of us wanted to leave.

Milo would have liked to spend all of his time right next to the water. This meant that Chris and I also spent a lot of time right next to the water.

Milo helped make ice cream (peach and strawberry and banana)...

...and ate lots of honey nut cheerios.

Christina was one of his girlfriends. Here Mardi has just given everyone stars.

Lucie helped Molly and Erica make prize certificates for Shannon's toy boat regatta.

She also made a boat. We were sad when it capsized, and we learned that Elmer's glue is water soluable.

Faeries served us cookies one night.

Lucie made this bird mask and performed with Erica's flock in Rada dada's sideshow.

More pictures are in the Boo Annex!

Gross anatomy

In response to persistent questioning by Lucie this morning, I gave her a somewhat detailed explanation of where babies come from. Lucie's take on it was, naturally, "That is gross!" I said that grown-ups don't really find it gross, and she said, "Well, I'm just a little kid, and I don't want to hear about that again until I'm 52!"

Earth Day

Also back in April, Lucie and Milo went to the Earth Day celebration in Durham's Central Park. We spent much of the time in the shade of a tent with the wonderful Schoolhouse of Wonder people.

Lucie did some painting with Crescent.

The Durham Parks and Rec people had a tent set up next door.

Milo also checked out Michele and Jamie's cool travel trailer.

Somehow, this guy fit in with the event's theme, "It's easy being green."

Ijapa the Tortoise plays

Back in April, the YPPC Munchkins performed two Ijapa the Tortoise stories. Lucie played the part of the Oba in the first story and had some very long lines to remember.

One of the villagers tells the Oba about the dancing palm tree. She says, "You must have been drinking too much palm wine."

In the second story, Lucie played the part of a mischievous bush spirit.
